Recorder at work

What’s involved?

Once a month commitment (on average), on an agreed rota basis, at our Dean Road Studio on a Wednesday (10.00am – 2.30pm). There we record the week’s news as narrated by our Reader volunteers.

Full training will be given; no previous recording experience is needed. A reference handbook is kept in the Studio.

Each Wednesday, the Recorder will record the morning’s readings at our dedicated Recording Studio. This involves capturing the sound outputs from the readers’ microphones – between one and four Readers in number each week – onto a dedicated PC. Each Scarborough Talking News Edition is about 1 hour and 20 minutes in length, on average.

The sound deck: it’s not anywhere near as complicated as it looks!

Once the readings are completed, the Recorder edits the sound files to remove any major errors and adds signature music etc. The files are then saved to a master USB stick and left at the end of the session for the Copier and Despatcher who do their work on the following morning.

The Recorder’s final task is to upload the files to a web portal to make the recording of the week’s Scarborough Talking News available via various apps, on the internet, Alexa and the News by Telephone service.
