Sometime after moving to Scarborough in 2005, I was visiting Scarborough Fair and met Mary Grunwell, totally unaware of the eventual consequences. She asked if I would be interested in becoming a reader for the Talking Newspaper. I had an elderly Aunt whose sight had deteriorated and I knew how much she enjoyed receiving her local newspaper on cassette tape so I agreed.
I presented myself at Dean Road to be ‘assessed’ and was told that the greatest need was for copiers rather than readers so that became my initial role. I did eventually do some reading but was then asked if I would train to be a recorder, which I did.
Then came the events of May 2023 (proposed closure of Scarborough Talking News ) and, along with many of the previous writers of this section of the Newsletter, returned home with a new job, that of Treasurer.
So, if you go to Scarborough Fair, be careful who you talk to!
